Zander Fieschko
Grew up in Pittsburgh and studied Cinematography and Sociology at Emerson College in Boston before moving to LA. That was ten years ago. He currently earns his keep in the Art Department for film and television and, much like photographer William Mortensen, uses models and creatives in that industry to blossom a photography career.

Tell us something about you. Maybe your life, profession, habit, dream.
Twice a day I brush my teeth with an Oral B electric toothbrush. It makes a racket and always wakes up the cats. This is a good example of how I feel like I’m not good enough in many ways. The dentist told me that I wasn’t doing a good job brushing my teeth and needed a machine to help me. I blame it on my youth when I should have been learning the basics and instead always rushed off to the next dreamy adventure.
What makes you choose this profession?
I’m still rushing off to the next dreamy adventure. And still trying to be a professional photographer. I’ve been a professional Set Decorator for Television shows in LA for ten years. Now it wears on me, and I seek more control and respect as a photographer. The skills learned and people I met will carry over and develop my unique photographic eye. In a way, I am admitting defeat in my current occupation, but Los Angeles is a wonderful forgiving city and loves to listen to my dreams.
What is your favorite camera? Why?
Nikon FM-2. I shoot 35mm with my mother’s. She had to stop shooting and get a desk job because of me, so in some ways I feel like I’m avenging her with my photography.
If you have a superpower or talent, which one do you wish to have? Why?
Flying, absolutely. With no altitude sickness, even in space. I would fly to the moon. Any further wouldn’t be safe; I would get lost. That’s the problem with immortality, that eventually the sun will die and you’re just this lonely man floating through space forever.
Will you still create new works when you are old?
That’s the funny thing about old age; why does it even happen? Every time we grow new skin, it’s thicker skin. Society literally tries to digest us until we actually die. With my thickest skin, I will make my best work and know exactly how to do it with the best people alive. Then I can die and my cells will go become a thousand other wonderful things like trees and butterflies, and forget everything they learned while being me.
